Nineteen-year-old Deepak Bachchan was suffering from Ebstein’s anomaly of the right heart valve. He reported to the Sameer Malik Heart Care Foundation Fund, an initiative of the Heart Care Foundation of India (HCFI). Deepak is a budding singer and his father works in a jewelry showroom as a salesman.
Ebstein anomaly is a congenital malformation characterized by variably malformed and displaced tricuspid valve leaflets that are partly attached to the tricuspid valve annulus and partly attached to the right ventricular endocardium. These features cause tricuspid valve regurgitation and right heart enlargement. The actuarial survival for all liveborn patients is 67% at one year and 59% at 10 years.
For children and adults with this disease, it is advisable to go for surgical repair to avoid adverse right heart remodeling based upon our institutional experience. Decision-making for such patients is individualized depending upon available surgical experience.
Deepak was operated at Medanta and Carpentier’s repair of Tricuspid valve was done with plication of atrialised right ventricle on 24th September 2015. Right heart tricuspid valve was changed with a prosthetic valve on September 2015. Not only is he doing well but has also given many performances on stage.
